About Polity Lab
A research-led approach to political systems.
Polity Lab exists to make political and democratic systems more legible. It brings together political analysis, electoral research, institutional thinking and data-informed methods to examine how power, information and organisations operate in practice.
Our purpose
Political decisions are only as sound as the evidence beneath them.
Political decisions are only as sound as the evidence, assumptions and feedback systems that inform them. Yet information can be incomplete, distorted or detached from local realities. Institutions can behave differently from how their formal structures suggest. Indicators can create false confidence when their limitations are ignored.
Polity Lab studies these problems directly. Its purpose is to support clearer analysis, stronger research practice and more rigorous understanding of political behaviour and institutional performance.
Our mission
To produce and support rigorous political intelligence and democratic research that connects evidence, context and systems-level analysis.
Our vision
A public and political environment in which decisions about democratic systems are informed by better evidence, clearer reasoning and a more realistic understanding of institutions and human behaviour.
How we think
Five convictions behind the work.
Political outcomes are multi-causal
No single dataset, demographic category or narrative can fully explain a political outcome. Robust analysis considers interactions, alternative explanations and local variation.
Organisations are shaped by incentives
Formal structures matter, but so do incentives, informal authority, career pressures and the quality of feedback. These factors influence what organisations know and how they act.
Information quality is a strategic variable
Data can be plentiful and still be misleading. Source reliability, reporting incentives, measurement choices and missingness must be examined before conclusions are drawn.
Measurement requires humility
Scores, indices and dashboards compress reality. They are useful only when the underlying construct is clear, the method is defensible and uncertainty is not concealed.
Democratic systems deserve serious analysis
Research on elections and institutions should be careful with evidence, transparent about methods and attentive to the consequences of how findings are interpreted and used.
Independence and standards
Evidence distinguished from interpretation.
Polity Lab’s editorial standard is to distinguish evidence from interpretation, make material limitations visible and avoid presenting hypotheses as established findings. Research outputs should identify relevant sources and methods. Any work involving sensitive data should be scoped with appropriate attention to lawful use, privacy, security and research ethics.
Where Polity Lab undertakes commissioned or collaborative work, independent publications are clearly distinguished from commissioned outputs.
Strategic work and collaboration
Clearly scoped questions.
Polity Lab can engage on clearly scoped strategic and analytical questions where rigorous diagnosis, evidence and systems thinking are required. Every engagement should define the question, scope, evidence base, intended users, deliverables and limits.
